Most queens on the UK market are bred for volume in a managed, medicated system. Ours are the opposite. We did not start these lines at all — wild colonies moved into empty hives of ours at the end of 2021 and have been left completely alone in the four years since: no Varroa treatment, no feeding, no swarm control. We breed only from the ones still strong, calm and productive after all of it.

Varroa is the reason most colonies die, and chemical treatment only ever buys time. Our breeding lines came through years of mite pressure with no intervention whatsoever, which means the resistance behaviours are in the bees rather than in a bottle: hygienic uncapping of infested brood, grooming, and a brood rhythm that breaks the mite’s breeding cycle.

“Smoke-free calm” is a literal description of how we work these hives. They are silent on opening. Silent when the crown board comes off. Almost silent as frames are lifted clear. No roaring, no running on the comb, no bees pinging off your veil.
That makes them the safest choice for beginners, for school and community apiaries, and for anyone keeping bees in a garden with neighbours over the fence. Calm bees are also easier to inspect properly — and colonies that get inspected properly stay healthier.

A gentle queen is worth little if her daughters are unmanageable. Temperament and productivity in honey bees are strongly maternal, and we select across generations specifically for traits that hold: calmness on the comb, steady spring build-up, tight brood pattern, and restrained swarming.

Imported queens are optimised for a continental climate: hard cold, dry air, a clean break in the brood cycle. A Welsh winter is nothing like that — it is long, damp and unpredictable, with false springs that ruin a stock not built for them.

The Tŷ Mêl Modular Introduction System
The zero-squish cassette. Because losing her on day one is a solved problem.
Standard wire-and-wood cages are pushed into the gap between frames and held there by pressure. Every time you replace a frame you are gambling with the cassette’s position — and the classic way to lose a £45 queen is to squash her cage between two combs on the way out of the hive. The wooden ones swell in damp, the wire ones chafe, and both leave her exposed to a colony that has not accepted her yet.
So we designed the cage out of the problem.
Your queen arrives in a cassette we print ourselves in Wales, in tinted translucent amber or sapphire blue resin. You can see her clearly without opening anything, the geometry is repeatable to a fraction of a millimetre, and every part is modular — so it can be improved without redesigning the whole system.

Our apiary
Greenmeadow Community Farm, Cwmbran
Our main scientific and educational apiary sits at Greenmeadow Community Farm in Cwmbran, with further survivor-stock sites across Torfaen. It is a working research apiary rather than a shop: colonies are recorded, measured and scored, and selection decisions are made from those records.
Being on a community farm shapes how we breed. Thousands of visitors and schoolchildren pass our hives every year, so calm bees are not a luxury here, they are a safety requirement. A colony that cannot be opened quietly in front of a class of seven-year-olds is not a colony we breed from. Breeding smoke-free calm queen bees is the whole point of the programme here, not a line of marketing.
That is the whole ethos: ethical, sustainable, community-focused beekeeping, with enough technology behind it to be honest about results. We run free educational visits for schools across Gwent, and the same records that support those sessions are the records behind your queen.

Why choose survivor stock queen bees over imported queens?
An imported queen is bred for a climate that is not ours. Our stock came to us on its own — wild colonies that moved into empty hives here at the end of 2021 and have been left entirely unmanaged for around four years since — no chemical treatments, no feeding, no propping up. What came through that is adapted to a wet, mild, mite-pressured Welsh year. You are buying proven local survival rather than a certificate, and because the traits are heritable, the daughters she raises carry the same resilience.
How do I introduce the queen from the cassette?
Clip the cassette between two frames using the frame lug clip with the mesh face against the comb, and leave the candy port closed for 24 to 48 hours so the colony takes her scent. Then open the candy port and let the bees eat through and release her over the following two to three days. Do not direct-release her on arrival and do not open the hive for a week afterwards. Illustrated instructions ship with every queen. Introduction success always depends on your hive management — the colony must be genuinely queenless and free of emergency queen cells.
Are you DASH accredited?
Not at present, and we would rather say so plainly than imply otherwise. Tŷ Mêl is registered with the National Bee Unit and our apiaries are open to NBU inspection. Every queen leaves a colony we have inspected for signs of notifiable disease before dispatch. DASH accreditation is on our roadmap, and the certificate will be published on this page the day it is granted.
Will she stay calm in my apiary?
Temperament is strongly maternal, so a calm queen tends to produce a calm colony. Our breeder colonies open in near silence: quiet on cracking the roof, quiet on lifting the crown board, and almost silent as frames come out. Expect that character to establish as her own brood replaces the existing workers, which takes roughly four to six weeks. Bear in mind that forage, weather and handling all affect behaviour — genetics set the baseline, not the whole picture.
What happens if the weather is bad during my dispatch month?
We hold her. A queen posted into a heatwave or a cold snap is a queen at risk, so we check the forecast for your apiary postcode before booking the courier and wait for a safe window. You will be told about any delay by phone or text, and your reservation simply moves to the next suitable dispatch day inside the June to July 2027 window.
What if she arrives deceased?
You are covered by our 100% Live Arrival Guarantee. Photograph the cassette and the queen as you find her, send it to us within 24 hours of delivery, and we will dispatch a replacement immediately with no quibbling and no forms to fill in.
Do you ship queen bees across the whole of the UK?
Yes. Queens travel anywhere in mainland Great Britain by Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm, dispatched on Thursdays and Fridays so she is never sitting in a depot over a weekend. Delivery is included in the £45 price. For Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, contact us first so we can confirm the current live-animal movement rules before you reserve.
How do I claim the £5 cassette return credit?
Once she is safely laying, post the empty cassette and frame lug clip back to us in the pre-addressed bag supplied with your order. We sterilise and reuse it, and credit £5 against your next queen. The resin is printed here in Wales, so keeping cassettes in circulation cuts both waste and cost.
Are these pure native black bees?
They are native-type Welsh black bees — dark, hardy Apis mellifera mellifera stock selected for local survival rather than for a purity certificate. Our queens are open mated with drones from our own survivor apiaries, which is how genuine local adaptation is maintained. We do not claim laboratory-verified racial purity; we claim proven performance in a Welsh climate.
